Using Triggers to Move Subscribers From One List to Another

There are times where you may want a subscriber's actions to determine whether or not they stay on one list or move to another. Let's say you have had your list for a long time and want to populate a new list of only your most engaged subscribers.

To do this you will use triggers, a tool that uses your subscriber's individual activity to create an action.

What is a trigger?

A trigger is a set rule that states when a subscriber performs one action, another will take place.

This is done in a very similar manner to an if this, then that scenario.

Located under Automation > Activity-based Triggers in your mailing list dashboard.

There are several actions that can be set to act as a trigger for the subsequent event.

Click the dropdown menu, New Rule, to select from the available options:

You can choose:

  • Subscribes
  • Unsubscribes
  • Opens a mailing
  • Clicks a tracked link

The next dropdown allows you to select what will happen when the subscriber takes the action selected in the first choice. In our example, we would choose a list for the subscriber to join when they click on any link in our mailings.

You must click Save Rule Changes >> to apply your Trigger to your list.

After saving you will see that you now have the option to delete the newly added rule and an option to add a new trigger to your list.

Now, when a subscriber clicks on any link they will be added to the list Mastering your Email Marketing.

If you want to also remove the subscriber from the current list when they take the same action. That is also possible. You can have several triggers, based on the same action, that take place at the same time.

It is possible to use triggers to allow your subscribers to unsubscribe from all of your lists when they unsubscribe from one list. This is the very last option available from the Do This dropdown. This option is very helpful if you have many lists in your account for your own purposes and not necessarily for your subscriber's needs or preferences.

Important

Triggers do not cascade, run in a series, or daisy chain from one list to another. If a subscriber is added from list one to list two and there is a new subscriber trigger on list two, the new subscriber trigger on list two will NOT be actioned. Add another trigger to list one to accomplish this task.

This is how you can use triggers to automate moving a subscriber from one list to another based on their actions. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know.
